NSM Celebrates Spring 2025 Graduates and Honors Outstanding Research
More than 800 students graduated from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics during the Spring 2025 Commencement at the Fertitta Center. The ceremony featured the presentation of an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters to Dr. Nathan Fowler (B.S. ’96), a student address by computer science major Ashish Job, and recognition of 4.0 GPA graduates and departmental banner bearers from each of NSM’s six departments.
During the ceremony, Vuong “Dustin” Nguyen, a Ph.D. graduate in computer science, was recognized as the Spring 2025 recipient of the Dan E. Wells Outstanding Dissertation Award. His dissertation, “Towards Robust Person Re-Identification: Learning Invariant Features Under Clothing Changes and Occlusions,” introduces machine learning models that improve identification in surveillance and forensic footage, even with clothing changes or obstructions. Nguyen conducted his research under the mentorship of Professor Shishir Shah and will begin work as an AI research scientist at Autodesk, Inc.
Thank you to all the faculty and staff who contributed their time and efforts to make this celebration a success.
